Mars Area Centennial School fifth-grader Madalyn Osterman took seventh place in the 2018-2019 Butler County DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Essay Contest.
DARE, which is brought to the school by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, prepares students to act decisively, confidently and comfortably in difficult situations. The program asks that all fifth-graders make a pledge to remain drug free and to write an essay about what they learned through the program.
First, second and third place essay contest winners from each fifth grade class were announced at the school’s annual DARE Graduation Ceremony, held in December; and, Osterman was selected as the overall winner. Her essay was then submitted to the county-wide contest to be judged against winning essays from 14 other DARE schools within Butler County.
As a winner, Osterman received tickets to the Sen. John Heinz History Center, two “free skate” tickets for the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, and a certificate for a free kids meal at Texas Roadhouse.
