Student Performs National Anthem at Penguins Game

Mars Area Centennial School sixth-grader Aidan Krepin was selected to sing the National Anthem at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ ninth annual “Free Game for Kids” on Sept. 28 at PPG Paints Arena.

After learning about the late cancellation of the game’s anthem singer, Mars Area alumnus Brian Magness, a Penguins staff member, wanted to showcase the musical talent available at the Mars Area School District and reached out to his wife, Stacie Magness, a fifth grade teacher at Mars Area Centennial School, and Shelley Zoelle, the school’s music teacher, to help find a replacement. Those students who were soloists at Mars Area Centennial School’s 2019 Spring Concert were then asked to audition and, ultimately, Aidan was selected to perform at the game.

The Penguins’ “Free Game for Kids” welcomed more than 18,000 youth hockey players and coaches, parents, chaperones, and leaders of other kids’ groups from around the region. For details, visit www.nhl.com/penguins/news/free-game-for-kids-provides-unique-atmosphere-for-pens/c-309555840.
