Numerous Mars Area School District students joined in a Math & Science Day activity, held Feb. 20 at Slippery Rock University.
At the event, Mars Area Centennial School fifth-graders and Mars Area Elementary School fourth-graders tested their biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics knowledge through various experiments and activities designed by university faculty members.
Students stacked six-sided “Insanity Cubes,” ensuring that only one image from each side of the cube appears on each side of the tower. The students explored physics through “The World of Waves,” examining waves on strings and plates as well as light and sound waves.
The students learned about chemistry by using common household ingredients to make bouncy balls. And, as part of a biology lesson, the students tested water quality to form hypotheses as to why mudpuppies, a species of salamander, have been observed to be sick or dying in local rivers.
