Fifth-graders at Mars Area Centennial School designed and constructed sea creature sculptures as part of the Phipps Conservatory Fairchild Challenge.
The challenge, Adaption Sculptures, titled “Sea Creature Creations,” asked the students to build a 3D sculpture of a sea creature that would be able to adapt to the ocean’s evolving conditions.
With some guidance from Mars Area High School students, the fifth-graders used recycled and repurposed materials to build their models. The students also submitted short descriptions of their creatures.
“We have spent much time learning about water in science this year. We have covered topics including ‘How is Water Important,’ ‘The Properties of Water,’ ‘The Water Cycle,’ ‘Streams and Rivers,’ ‘Ponds and Lakes,’ and ‘Wetland Environments.’” says Stephanie Ising, fifth grade teacher. “We have also prepared for and attended the Stream Study and learned about the ocean and some of the animals that live there.”
The students previously completed the Fairchild Challenges — “Biological Sculptures,” “Urban Design & Environmental Justice,” and “Nature Exploration & Writing.”
