Students at Mars Area Centennial School are learning about the basics of computer programming as part of a STEAM lesson incorporating Sphero robots.
Students are finishing up a nine-week STEAM Coding, Programming & Robotics Unit, says Christopher Churilla, STEAM teacher. The unit introduced the Sphero Draw program, which called upon students’ attention to detail and logistical thinking as well as their sequencing, measurement and estimating skills.
Through the Sphero Draw program, the students programmed robots, using the draw function to design and create spiral artworks, which are on display outside the school’s STEAM Room.
As part of a culminating reward activity the students participated in Sphero Bowling by programming the robots to knock down “pins” at the end of a makeshift bowling lane. For more information, call (724) 625-2601.
