Elementary Students Join in LinguiSHTIK Competition

a large group of students wearing yellow shirtsSeveral Mars Area School District students competed in the Academic Games League of America (AGLOA) LinguiSHTIK academic competition, held Dec. 17 at Slippery Rock University.

In the Grades 3-4 Division, fourth-graders Avery Mahon, Amelia Palermo, Tyson Szelong and Edison Thiry went undefeated. The team of fourth-graders Dexton Sinetar, Isaac Sedei, Tyson Szelong, Edison Thiry and Juliette Wagner tied for second place.

In the Grades 5-6 Division, sixth-grader Jack Baumgartel and fifth-graders Lukas Fecich, Kendall Fonzi and Jessica Li went undefeated. Two teams, one made up of sixth-graders Alexander Chernykh, Bennett Kreit, Jack Baumgartel, Asher Detore and Maximus Veneziano and the other of fifth-graders Jane Lyons, Hannah Ziegler, Eleanor McCauley, Kendall Fonzi and Everly Northrop, tied for fifth place.

Other participating student included sixth-graders Cayley Chaffee, Hannah Craver, Gillian Everest, Lila Demetris, Lucy Harrison, Landon Lewis, Constance Miller, Ashrith Muppala, Laura Spaulding and Adalyn Stuber; fifth-graders Noah Bergdahl, Landon Lewis, Angelo Navari and Pranshu Thakkar; fourth-graders L.J. Crawford, Brady Gaab, Carly Gibson, Winnie Hawk, Kiya Keir, Avery Mendocino, Avery Kreit, Oscar Mulvaney and Dean Newkirk; and, third-graders Shreeya Sridharan, Arshiv Balaji, Lincoln Phillips, Silas Mahan, Josh Johnston, Ryland Roberts, Ella Bouchard and Olivia Chalmers.

LinguiSHTIK, which challenges students in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and writing skills, asks players to compose sentences with proper grammar application and richer vocabulary. The competition, open to students in Grade 4-12, brings together students from schools Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties through Midwestern Intermediate IV.
