Fifth-graders Compete in ‘Battle of the Books’ Reading Competition

Students in Alyssa Fertig, Katelyn Ingoldsby, Bill Sepich and Brian Zima’s fifth grade classes at Mars Area Centennial School tested their knowledge of various fantasy novels as part of an annual “Battle of the Books” reading competition, held May 16.

Winners were “The Literature Llamas” team of Zachary Angoff, Ryan Babeo, Ryan McGee, Patrick Miko  and Samuel Steigerwald; and “The Awesome Athletics” team of Samantha Carmelite, Dylan Hall, Ava Herbolich, Ella Nicotra and Carson Tomcik.

As part of the competition, teams of students were asked to answer a series of questions about several books including “The City of Ember” by Jeanne DuPrau, “Witch & Wizard” by James Patterson, “Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark” by Ridley Pearson, “Gregor the Overlander” by Suzanne Collins, “Indian in the Cupboard” by Lynne Reid Banks and “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman.
